Post-Operative Instructions
DO’s:
- To avoid feeling unwell, take pain medication with a full stomach.
- Plan to have a responsible adult with you for 24 hours after receiving any anesthetic.
- Replace electrolytes by drinking lots of liquids and energy supplementing beverages after surgery.
- Stick to eating soft foods, slowly introducing regular food back to your diet.
- Post-op antibiotics can increase sun sensitivity. If your care plan requires you to take antibiotics, avoid direct sun exposure during the duration of your antibiotic use.
- Take it easy! Avoid any strenuous activity or exercise, and avoid swishing or over-rinsing in your mouth. These activities can cause dry-socket or excessive bleeding.
- Plan to rest a minimum of 1-2 days after your wisdom teeth have been removed.
- Brush and floss your teeth as you normally would after 24 hours post-op, as long as it doesn’t cause excessive pain.
DONT’s:
Don’t drive yourself or operate any heavy machinery for at least 24 hours after receiving anesthetic.
Don’t put ice on any sort of infection, or apparent infection.
Don’t mix pain medication with alcoholic substances.
Don’t move around quickly after receiving IV anesthetic. Getting up to quickly may cause light headedness or fainting.
